The Wildcats earned their nickname in 1909, after a 6-2 football win. The head of the State University military department, Commandant Carbusier, publicly praised Kentucky’s football team, who, according to him, “played like wildcats.” The nickname stuck, and we’re glad it did, or else we wouldn’t have incredible vintage logos like this.
